Opera in Literature - The Arias of “Bel Canto”

Book's heroine based on soprano, Renée Fleming

Singers from Mercury Opera Rochester will be performing arias mentioned in the book “Bel Canto” by Ann Patchett in a concert on Sunday, March 21 at 2 PM at the Rochester Academy of Medicine at 1441 East Avenue.

The goal of “If All of Rochester Read the Same Book…” is to encourage people to connect to others in the Rochester community through reading and discussion, and through the shared experience of literature.  Each year Writers & Books selects one book for our community to explore together, leading to an extended residency by the author.

This year’s selection, “Bel Canto”, by Ann Patchett, is steeped in the most popular soprano arias from operas and classical soprano repertoire.   Mercury Opera Rochester is collaborating with Writers and Books to bring the Rochester community a performance of many of the arias from the book.  Several local sopranos will be performing in the recital, including Danielle Frink and Holly Corcoran.  Piano accompaniment will be provided by Richard Masters.  Selections on the program will include many of the most famous and popular soprano arias from operas by Puccini, Verdi, Rossini, and Offenbach, as well as the Ave Maria.

Tickets for “The Arias of "Bel Canto” are $10 in advance and are available at Writers and Books at 740 University Avenue in Rochester and by phone at (585) 473-2590 extension 107.   Tickets will also be available at the Rochester Academy of Medicine beginning 30 minutes prior to the event for $15.
